Spain has once again secured the top position in Europe for clinical trials. According to various Clinical Research Organisations at BioSpain 2025 (7–9 October, Barcelona), this is largely due to the speed with which the Spanish Medicines Agency (AEMPS) approves clinical studies.

BioSpain 2025 opened in Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, setting a new record for both visitors and exhibitors. During the inauguration, representatives from government and industry highlighted the leading role of biotechnology in building economic and environmental resilience in Spain and across the European Union.

The European Commission has launched a public consultation to support the development of the European Biotech Act, which is now being prioritised after a previous delay. The Commission plans to publish the legislative proposal by the end of 2025 and is inviting stakeholders across the biotechnology sector to provide feedback on regulatory, financial, and operational barriers.

Spain’s biotech sector drives innovation, economic growth, and scientific excellence. With strong R&D investment, global research impact, and a leading role in gender equality, it’s a key player in health, sustainability, and strategic autonomy. BIOSPAIN 2025 in Barcelona will showcase its potential and connect global biotech leaders.

The Spanish BIO-CAT cluster has launched a new accelerator called ATMP Catalyst, which will support six preclinical gene and cell therapy projects per year in each of three annual calls to support translation into clinical development.

Born with the aim of harmonising the application, evaluation, and supervision process of clinical trials conducted in EU countries, there is much room for improvement for the Clinical Trial Information System CTIS, particularly with regard to SMEs and translational researchers.
