AstraZeneca announces a US$50 billion investment in the USA amid pharma’s transatlantic drift. Virgina is set to become the multi-billion-dollar drug manufacturing hub.

The British Food Standards Agency (FSA) has formally accepted an application by French start-up Gourmey SAS for regulatory approval of its cultivated foie gras, a product developed using cellular agriculture techniques. The submission was initially lodged on 26 July 2024 and was made in parallel across five jurisdictions: the European Union, United States, Singapore, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed the BIOSECURE Act, prohibiting U.S. biopharma companies from working with Chinese contractors due to national security concerns, including data leaks and intellectual property theft. The Act is expected to pass the Senate.

The BIOSECURE Act of the United States could affect more than 120 US biopharmaceutical drugs partnered with Chinese companies ‘of concern’, as named in the bill. Of these, approximately half are in clinical trials (phases I to III) and a third are in early preclinical and discovery stages, according to GlobalData, the analytics company.
