Increase Your Culture Yields with Fibra-Cel® Disks

Fibra-Cel Disks are an advanced, solid support material for the efficient growth of mammalian and insect cells in bioreactors. They are devised to improve the cultivation of anchorage-dependent as well as suspension cells. Fibra-Cel Disks can be used also for perfusion cell culture with the Eppendorf packed-bed impeller - available for glass, stainless steel, and single-use bioreactors.

Fibra-Cel is made of a mixture of a non-woven polyester fiber and a polypropylene mesh. The disks are electrostatically pre-treated to facilitate cell adherence and cell trapping in the fiber system. Fibra-Cel enables sustained long-term periods of high-density cell growth in perfusion, without danger of clogging of cell retention devices. It also simplifies downstream processing by eliminating the need for subsequent filtration to separate cells from medium and the end product. Cell cultivation on Fibra-Cel is predominantly used to produce secreted products such as recombinant proteins and viruses. Fibra-Cel Disks are successfully used with a broad range of mammalian and insect cell lines, including hybridoma cells, CHO and Vero cells, stem cells, and Sf9 cells.

The structure and pure material of Fibra-Cel Disks as well as the use in the packed-bed bioreactor provide some unique advantages over common solid growth materials. The matrix protects cells from damaging shear forces caused by the turbulence of impeller rotation and sparge gas. The disks have a high surface to volume ration, which increases the biomass that can be maintained in the bioreactor.

For use in GMP production, the disks’ materials are USP Class VI-certified. They can be autoclaved without any adverse effects on the material.
