Sweden: Biobank law
The Sweden Biobank Act governs the collection, storage, and usage of identifiable human material samples for specific purposes.
Sweden is set to introduce a new Biobank Act on July 1, 2023, replacing the current regulation. The new act aims to make it easier to conduct research on human tissue while continuing to protect the privacy and integrity of sample donors. The Biobank Act governs the collection, storage, and usage of identifiable human material samples for specific purposes. It replaces the previous 2003 act with similar aims. Medical experts had long highlighted its drawbacks, including being complicated to manage and incompatible with other legislation, and have welcomed the update. Mark Divers, director of KI Biobank, called it a step in the right direction: The new act will make it easier to do research on human tissue while enhancing the privacy of the individual, which makes it possible to respond better to the desire of the sample-providers to contribute to medical research. In addition, the new act has received praise for its potential to facilitate research collaborations.
