Furthermore, the investment forum, designed to introduce Spanish biotechnology projects to foreign and local investors, provided a range of panel discussions on current funding topics and initiatives.

According to Asebio, Life Sciences venture capital funds have invested nearly €600m since 2008. In Spain, investments reached a new high in 2018 totaling nearly €95m, particularly from private investors.

In 2016, international funding made up €40m of the €64m in private investment. In 2017 international investments grew to €70m of the €94m million raised, and in 2018 international investors contributed €74m of the €95m raised in Spain. In recent years, the maturing Spanish sector attracted investment from top benchmark countries like France, Belgium, United States and Japan.

“We firmly believe in the role of specialized investors, both venture capital and corporate investors, in providing funding, smart money, to boost the development of our biotechnology ecosystem,” commented Ion Arocena, Director General at Asebio.
