Abivax cashes in on investor enthusiasm with €807m raise

Abivax has raised $920m (€807m) in gross proceeds through a US public offering, only days after new obefazimod data helped calm investor concerns over the drug’s safety profile in ulcerative colitis.

Why it matters: The financing gives the French biotech a much stronger balance sheet as it prepares for a potential US regulatory filing for obefazimod, its once-daily oral drug candidate for moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis.

Zoom in: The offering was first announced as a $600m raise, then upsized to $800m after what Abivax described as strong investor demand. With the underwriters’ option now fully exercised, the final gross amount rises to $920m.

  • The company now expects estimated net proceeds of about $874.1m (€767.1m), after underwriting commissions and estimated expenses.
  • The proceeds are intended to fund potential US commercialisation of obefazimod, clinical R&D in ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, and general corporate purposes.

Backstory: Earlier this week, Abivax reported additional Phase III maintenance data for obefazimod, including new safety analyses across its ulcerative colitis programme.

  • The update followed a sharp market reaction earlier in June, when strong Phase III efficacy data were overshadowed by investor concerns over malignancy cases seen in the 50 mg arm.
  • The new data did not remove the safety question entirely, but gave Abivax more context to argue that malignancy rates should be interpreted against a broader exposure-adjusted safety database.

By the numbers: Before the offering, Abivax had €491.6m in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments at the end of March, enough to fund operations into the fourth quarter of 2027.

  • The company said the $800m base offering, before exercise of the underwriters’ option, would extend its cash runway into the second quarter of 2029.

The bottom line: Abivax has used a narrow window of renewed investor confidence to secure a very large financing package. The company now has more room to prepare for a possible US launch but obefazimod’s regulatory and commercial story will still depend on how convincingly Abivax can defend the drug’s benefit-risk profile in a crowded ulcerative colitis market.
