IP Seminar for Life Sciences & Chemistry

Patents remain a key driver of innovation in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and chemical industries. At the same time, new decisions of the Unified Patent Court (UPC), the ongoing development of the Unitary Patent system and evolving practice at the European Patent Office are creating new strategic challenges for companies operating in research-intensive sectors.

Against this backdrop, BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT will host its IP Seminar Life Sciences & Chemistry in Heidelberg on November 3, 2026. The complimentary event is designed for patent professionals, in-house counsel, R&D leaders, innovation managers and decision-makers from the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and chemical industries. The seminar will be conducted in English.

The program provides an overview of current developments in European patent law and examines their impact on intellectual property strategies in innovation-driven businesses. Particular attention will be given to the growing body of UPC case law and its practical implications for patent prosecution, enforcement and defence, as well as for the strategic management of patent portfolios across Europe.

The seminar will also address selected topics that are particularly relevant to the life sciences sector. These include recent developments concerning second medical use claims, aspects of biologics protection and supplementary protection certificates (SPCs). Participants will gain insights into current requirements for securing protection for innovative technologies and learn how IP strategies can be adapted to changing legal and commercial conditions.

Another focus will be on the management of international patent portfolios. Discussions will explore how companies can strengthen their IP position, identify risks at an early stage and safeguard the value of their innovations over the long term. Both legal and business considerations that shape modern IP strategies will be addressed.
