Iberian biotech newcomer
The geographical proximity of Spains Northwestern region Galicia to Northern Portugal is a key factor for the birth of the new bioregion CT-Bio. This achievement looks forward to improving business competitiveness and the consolidation of the biotech and life sciences sector internationally.
The bioregion was born within the framework of the CT-Bio Project, co-financed by the European Union, and made possible due to the combined efforts of two biotech industry associations, Bioga (Galicia) and P-Bio (Portugal), the Universities of Santiago de Compostela and Minho, the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, and the Consortium or the Free Trade Zone of Vigo.
Companies forming the Bioregion possess the production capacity and high level of technology and innovation, scientific knowledge development, a large percentage of clients from external markets, intensive international collaboration, and complementarity with other sectors. The Bioregion is comprised of more than 120 biotech companies with an investment base of more than €200m in R&D, an annual growth of over 15 percent, 16 research centres, and six universities. The bioregion is export-oriented, and its export levels are on the rise.
