Increase viral RNA extraction throughput with automation
During the global COVID-19 outbreak, BioEcho developed a rapid extraction protocol that reduced the isolation of SARS-CoV-2-RNA to just a few minutes. Currently, BioEcho offers a CE-marked viral RNA/DNA extraction kit and is implementing automated solutions that will allow customers to increase their diagnostics throughput.
Traditional nucleic acid extraction technologies available on the market are based on a bind-wash-elute principle. BioEcho’s patent-pending EchoLUTION technology relies on a single-step nucleic acid isolation. All impurities, such as salts and cellular debris, are retained, allowing the DNA and RNA to pass through the matrix without further interactions with organic solvents. This results in increased nucleic acid purity, integrity, and yield while reducing the overall workflow time. The EchoLUTION products portfolio covers a broad range of biological samples such as plant tissue, animal tissue, cell culture, blood, and viruses.
SARS-CoV-2 RNA extraction in 5 minutes
The EchoLUTION viral RNA and DNA extraction kit provides a rapid and reliable solution for diagnostic laboratories, allowing them to conduct large-scale tests for COVID-19 diagnosis. The 5-minutes extraction method starts with instant virus lysis without incubation time followed by a single-step purification via centrifugation. The cutting-edge technology from BioEcho increases the throughput by reducing the time needed for viral RNA or DNA extraction drastically. The EchoLUTION viral kit represents a solution for approximately 12 % of COVID-19 PCR tests performed in Germany and other European countries. The EchoLUTION Viral RNA/DNA Swab Kit recently received CE mark approval eliminating tedious validation processes for diagnostic routines.
Tailored automated solutions
The viral RNA and DNA extraction can be performed manually within a couple of minutes for plate formats. Including sample transfer from the primary tubes into the lysis buffer, the entire process can be performed in around 20 min (figure top). The automated workflow will enable processing 96-well plates, including PCR setup, within the same time (figure bottom). Both full and semi-automated versions of the workflow are possible, which will speed up the extraction, increase process reliability, and reduce hands-on time. Thus, customers can focus on downstream applications like the SARS-CoV-2 PCR or sequencing.
