Sustainable DNA extraction

BioEcho develops single-spin and 96-well kits for the isolation of DNA from different starting materials. In contrast to common bind-wash-elute procedures their proprietary EchoLUTION single-step technology avoids the use of inhibitory or harmful process reagents and does not require washing steps.

90% of the disposal costs are saved as well as more than 40% of the pipet tip consumption costs. The inhibitor-free DNA enables lowered time-to-result in enzyme-dependent genomic analyses such as PCR or NGS.

The need for more sustainability is rapidly changing the world´s behavior. People around the globe demonstrate for less CO2 and plastics, since their impact on climate change is being heavily discussed. However, in the field of Molecular Biology and particularly DNA extraction these topics are not addressed at all. Due to the commonly used Silica based extraction technology, which is more than 3 decades old and based on a huge amount of plastic consumption, saving plastics or enabling a better lab health is simply not possible.

With BioEcho´s foundation 2016, the vision of a Life Science world based on non-toxic reagents and less plastics became reality. All products are beneficial for lab health and generate 70 % less plastic or harmful waste and therefore meet the challenges which come up with climate change and the world’s accelerated environmental pollution.

Simple correlation between harmful plastics consumption and disposal costs

The innovative EchoLUTION process, either in spin or in 96-well format does not need any washing steps, which makes the process much faster and easier to handle, at the same time it uses just 30% of plastics to be disposed later on (see fig).

It also works completely without denaturing salts and organic solvents. These harmful reagents – used in common Silica-based bind-wash-elute DNA extraction – not only inhibit enzymatic-reaction based analysis like PCR or NGS, when carried over into the DNA preparation; they also are detrimental for lab health and need to be disposed of at 90% higher costs.

Faster process – 50 % of pipet tips saved

The EchoLUTION process is much faster and avoids any washing step. The lysate is processed in only one centrifugation step, independent of the throughput, i. e. as a single-sample isolation in a spin column or multi-parallel in a 96-well plate. BioEcho’s proprietary purification matrix is tuned to make sure that all unwanted components are either filtered out or retained in just one single step. Thus, DNA preparations performed with EchoLUTION need just 50 % of pipet tips, an underestimated environmental hazard and cost factor so far.

Ideal for environment, lab safety and health

For the planet´s future it is crucial to implement sustainable, eco-friendly lab processes with reduced amounts of plastic-based kit components and – ideally –  no hazardous liquids. Typically, commonly used Silica based kits must be used with caution and increased risk for lab safety and health; contaminated plastic waste and liquids must be disposed of separately. Due to BioEcho´s convenient EchoLUTION single-step purification technology, which avoids irritant and corrosive guanidine-hydrochloride or organic solvents, the plastic waste is subject to less stringent restrictions and can be simply disposed of at lower costs.  Furthermore, the Kit and spin column packaging is completely free of plastics, just based on carton or corn starch, thus additionally conserving natural resources. Other factors like the transport of goods, where less weight and size of freight items also decrease the CO2 emissions and overall costs, are not even yet considered.

Future oriented DNA extraction

The EchoLUTION DNA extraction kits are based on an aequeous technology, developed for minimum plastic consumption and specified for a wide variety of starting materials from blood, tissue, cells or plant. The purified genomic DNA is free from all inhibitors and salts – highly pure and ready-to-use. Plastic consumption is reduced by 70% and after sales costs cut by 50 % (pipet tip savings and waste disposal costs). The decision to use BioEcho products will be beneficial to the environment, lab safety and health as well as for financial assets.
