Summer 2025
Preview: (Bio)Engineering
Using engineered organisms for chemical manufacturing was the initial foundation motivation for Genentech in 1976 in South San Francisco. However, pharmaceutical manufacturing in recombinant bacteria seemingly was the lower hanging fruit. With advances in spatial Omics, synthetic biology, and molecular pathway engineering, the food industry as well as chemical manufacturing are candidate markets to see substantial input from the biotechnology sector with first product launches in 2025.
Topics to be covered in this special feature:
- Process development
- Facility management
- Modular bioengineering
- Plant construction
- Services for the food and pharmaceutical sectors
- CDMOs
- Culture media optimisation
- Strain and pathway engineering
- Synthetic biology
- Zero-emission biofuels
- Long-chain carbohydrates
- Synthetic circuit-based drug development
- Metabolic engineering
- Quality assurance and analytics
- Genetic and proteomic tools
